M.I. (Mineral Insulated) cable is used to insulate thermocouple wires from one another and from the metal sheath that surrounds them. MI Cable has two (or four when duplex) thermocouple wires running down the middle of the tube. The tube is then filled with magnesium oxide powder and compacted to ensure the wires are properly insulated and separated. MI cable helps to protect the thermocouple wire from corrosion and electrical interference.

This is a stainless steel, Type-K Thermocouple. A thermocouple works by taking two wires made of dissimilar metals, connecting them at the two ends, and making a temperature gradient between one end and the other (a ‘hot’ end and a ‘cold’ one).

Mineral insulated thermocouples consist of an outer metal sheath which protects the thermocouple elements from damage and contamination, this sheath is malleable so mineral insulated thermocouples can be easily bent and formed into a variety of shapes to suit your application. The inner thermocouple elements are insulated with magnesium oxide powder, tightly packed so no air is trapped inside,  this provides great thermal conductivity.

A Mineral Insulated (MI) thermocouple features a mineral oxide insulated sheathed cable of metal. This thermocouple comprises a thermocouple wire that is insulated with magnesium oxide, typically compacted by the process of swaging or drawing the sheath. At Aavad instrument, we provide MI thermocouples manufactured using the best quality MI thermocouple probes housed in an alloy sheath. Owing to their rugged and reliable construction, these thermocouples are being widely considered for harsh and rigorous conditions.

Type N. Type N (Nicrosil–Nisil) thermocouples are suitable for use between −270 °C and +1300 °C, owing to its stability and oxidation resistance.

Type N is a relativity new thermocouple type that was made to be an alternative to Type K. It has high stability over time but is more costly than type K at similar temperature ranges. Its sensitivity is about 39 µV/°C, slightly lower compared to type K.

K-Type thermocouples are inexpensive, small, dependable, and have fast reaction times. They can measure a wide range of temperatures from -270°C to 1,372°C with a small degree of error. Typically K-type thermocouples are used in temperatures above 540°C and in oxidizing atmospheres.
